Message:
Interested in Rowley in Idaho married to Townsend who came from SD.
I see ID census pages for 1870 and would like to see possible connection.

Thanks
Lew

With so little information, it is difficult to respond. What were the Rowley and Townsend first names and what dates?

1. In 1880 Idaho census (Township 40, Nez Perce), Emma Rowley is the stepdaughter of Hezekiah Townsend. That implies that his wife Rachael (from NY) was first married to a Rowley prior to her marriage to Townsend. Emma was born in WI.

2. a Joan Townsend is referenced in the database provided to me by the late Tedd Rowley from his research. I suspect that she was connected with a Rowley or with Tedd's mother's family and isn't now only because of a database error. The reference associated with her says "Joseph Brown Turner Genealogical Collection on LDS Film 0006,284 under "Hanson."" I have no other information concerned with her.

So I'm sorry, but I have no information to help you.

Judy

Your 1. is my line. Hezekiah is my gggrandfather and Rachel Rowley is his third wife (I descend from the first wife).. She was apparently a Philips from NY and a widow in Union Co., SD. Emma is a step-daughter and there are a couple of other Rowley boys.

I'll include what I have from my FTM file at the bottom. Much of the Rowley and Philips information that I have I stubbled onto from others. But I would be interested in finding descendants of Rowleys and Townsends, particularly since when Hezekiah and Rachel went west from SD it was with his, hers and their children. That is with some of the children from Hezekiah's second marriage and one from his first spent time in ID with the others.

Joan Townsend rings no bells, but I'll try and track that source you mention.

I do have a Luther Burton Townsend a Hezekiah son from 2nd that went to ID and OR and I've now found he died in Gilliam Co OR, but have no other information.

How large is your Rowley Society? I'm President of the Townsend Society of American with 550 members at www.townsendsociety.org

Thanks

Shows what can come of such in innocuous message. His #1 refers to my message. He added additional information on the connection along with sources. I'll post as soon on the website as soon as I can.

Hm. reminds me that the queries aren't being posted. Anyone want to volunteer to convert them to HTML so I can get them up?

We don't have a society per se.. I inherited the Rowley website and files from Tedd Rowley who died recently (we shared an ancestor... 13 generations back). Tedd had received the original set from Ernie Spencer who did much of the original research work.

Ernie started by collecting all ROWLEY data in New York and expanded from there in trying to identify his ancestors. He identified them by immigrant ancestor and organized them by 'branches'... hence our numbering system. Each group gets a branch and each branch is designated by their relationship to the immigrant. The immigrant is assigned BR#-1.01 and his children are numbered as generation two. So one might be 1-2.003. Full explanation.

I did find a few other relevant Townsends that might help me with identifications. It seems your Townsends kept rooming houses or hotels where my Rowleys were caught on the censuses. Easiest way to find them is to go to the search screen and enter TOWNSEND. Response will be a list of all files containing TOWNSEND on the site.  As soon as I figure out who the people are, I enter their 'Spencer number' on the data sheet.

1. Albert Rowley was on the 1850 census in Greece, Monroe Co, NY in the household of Jesse Townsend, pedler

2. Emma Rowley is a domestic in the household of George and Charlotte Townsend in Solon, Cortland Co., NY in 1860

3. Edward Rowley from VT is in the household of Henry C and Jennie Townsend (she from VT) in Bluffton, Wells, IN in 1880

So ... another three 'odd and ends" connections. Thank you very much for what you provided and thanks for listening..

A very interesting website and approach. I've shared with a couple of others for ideas.

Thanks

Per this census looks like Rachel and 3 brothers? and two children, but note one year old is Phillips but later is Rowley.

Rachel would be in Union Co SD 1870 census

And I have an apparent older brother for Rachel in my DB.
