ROWLEY
WARNING! The following is transcribed from microfilmed handwritten records, titled East Haddam Genealogies. The reader is cautioned that there are errors contained in this record which is presented as written. Because there are problems with this, and not to lead the novice astray, explanation boxes will appear to explain some of the major errors. Be forewarned, even though these explanation boxes appear, they do not cover all problems. Yet, it is presented because many or most of the dates appear to correspond with other compilations, and there are numerous references which the diligent researcher can follow.
One of the problems to be immediately aware of, is that the order and number of children does not agree, in many instances, with other genealogies more commonly cited.
As noted above, this record is transcribed as written, with one exception. A number and a "+" symbol will appear in front of the child's family number to indicate there is a further genealogy relating to that person below.
Following the Rowley charts is a short addition, titled, "A Study-- Who was the wife of Samuel Corbe or Corbet?" Since the wife of Samuel3 was Abigail Rowley, and much of the discussion involves Rowleys, it was included herein.
1. Moses Rowley1seems to have come to E. H. in his old age, some years after his son Moses Rowley, and grand son Moses Rowley, had settled there. He probably died about 1705.Elizabeth Rowley, widow of Moses Rowley, late of Haddam East, deeded her right of dower in land in Falmouth, Mass. 30 May 1714, to her sons, Moses Rowley and John Fuller. Land which had belonged to him was divided by deed 14 June 1715, by his sons, Moses Rowley and Matthew Rowley, and described as a piece of land which was given them by their "hond father, Moses Rowley, Senr deceased.
He married in Barnstable, Mass., 22 Ap. 1652, with Elizabeth Fuller.

I. | Nathan Rowley bap. 3 Ap. 1715. | ||
II. | Abigail Rowley bap. 8 Ap. 1716. |
Thomas Rowley died 24 Oct. 1719. He had a wife Mary, and their daughter, Phebe Rowley, was born 13 July 1719, and died 8 May 1719-20 according to the town record, but what calendar justifies the double date is not known.
Perhaps the wife of Thomas Rowley was Mary Cornwell, and she may have been that "Mary Cornwell alias Cornwell. She m. 10 May 1721 with John Fuller.
Widow Tabitha Rowley died -- --, 6 Feb 1813, aged 66.
Thankful Rowley was baptized in --, -- --, 26 July 1747.
A study-- Who was the wife of Samuel Corbee or Corbet
Samuel Corbee m. 21 Jan. 1724-25, with Abigail. In his will of 26 Aug. 1757, he named "hond mother, Mary Rowley." Did his own mother Mary (Crippen) Corbe m. ----- Rowley? If so, which one, or was his wife Abigail, born Rowley? If so, whose daughter?
His wife, Abigail, in her will of 16 Nov. 1764, proved in April, 1765, mentioned her brothers and sisters, Moses Rowley, Daniel Rowley, (also Daniel's son, Joseph Langrell Rowley.), Mehitabel Chapman, and Mary Fuller. Of these four it seems possible to identify the first three, Moses Rowley, Daniel Rowley, and Mehitabel Chapman, as the children of Moses3 and Martha (Porter)Rowley, but in that household they seem to have no sister Abigail to marry with Samuel Corbee, and their mother was not Mary, if we have rightly read and arranged the records.
She also named cousins, Anna Olmsted, Abigail Fuller, Levina Phelps, Azariah Heath and Samuel Corbet Heath.
Anna Olmsted may have been a daughter of William Olmsted by his second wife, Anna Rowley, a sister of Moses, Daniel, and Mehitabel, but no such daughter is on record for them. This might have made her a niece of the testator, and so mioght have been called cousin.
Abigail Fuller may have been born 3 July 1753, the youngest daughter of Thomas Fuller by his first wife, Martha Rowley, who was a sister of Moses, Daniel, and Mehitabel Rowley. The mother of the child died 13 March 1760.
Levine Phelps has not been identified. Two of that name, or Lavina, are known later, but no one so early.
Azariah Heath, however related, was brought up in their household and was still living with them. Samuel Corbet Heath was his son.
Children of Samuel2and Mary (Crippen) Corbee.
I. | Mary Corbee3 b. 13 Nov. "1691"; bap. as Mary Corbin,
24 Dec. 1714. The year of her birth was, without doubt, 1692, and in the inventory of her father's estate, in April 1694, she was called "about 17 months old." |

II. | Samuel Corbee3 b. 10 Dec. 1692; bap. as Samuel
Corbin, 24 Dec. 1704; m. 21 Jan. 1724-25, with Abigail Rowley. She j. ch. as Abigail
Corbet, 11 Nov. 1744, and died 29 Nov. 1764. He died, as Samuel Corby, 15 Sept.
1757, and his headstone (G.H.) says in his 63d year. There can be no doubt that his birth was in 1694, and not in 1692, as recorded. The Probate record shows that he was "posthumous, and about 3 months old 17 March 1694-95. They seem to have had no children. His will, dated 26 Aug. 1757, proved 19 Oct. 1757, named wife Abigail; Hond mother, Mary Rowlee; Azariah Heath who now lives with me, and whom I brought up, and Joseph Langrell Rowley, who is to have all lands in Middletown. The will was recorded as that of Samuel Corbe. |
